I have never seen the fascination with Steampunk.

I still don't understand how steampunk is equated with scantily clad fishnet wearing hoebags with bad hair and well dressed men. Not fair... I want scantily clad lads and women with tremendously Edwardian Gibsons. Bad goth is still bad goth.
I don't understand how steampunk turned into portraying the rich elite of the Victorian Era... it should be tattered around the edges, filthy, grimey... it's only in the last few years with it's explosion in popularity that it's become all polished and pristine...

My fascination with steampunk is from accidentally stumbling across some folk at NorWesCon oh those many many years ago while marching around as Psi Corp... I found a group in victorian attire (more worker caste as opposed to the elite vibe, or even the burlesque vibe that has worked it's way into it at present), they were secretive and fled... so since then, I've been slowly researching it and got into it pretty heavy just before it became super popular... the fascination is that it's born out of the works of H. G. Wells, Jules Verne, and others of the era of writing... truly classic science fiction, adventure, and horror that I read and loved wayyyy back in gradeschool...

I got into Steampunk back in the late nineties early aughts and was more interested in the alternate history such as Jules Vernes. My father would read me Vernes in French. To me there is a very continental grimey mad science vibe to it. Shelley meets Tesla and they hatch dirigible contraptions with sentience and sparks.

Isn't that how everyone dressed in New Zealand back then? Replace the metal with feathers and mud stoppered whiskey bottles whilst everyone panics over a Piano and then we're closer I think!

I'm not too sure about that. The boobs are real and the room is actually fairly cool.
