I remember seeing Dragonheart with Sean Connery doing the digital dragons voice. I thought that was a fantastic use of CGI, back in 96, too. Though I think it'll be a lot longer before they can replace an actors voice they same way they are trying to replace their visual presence.

Dragonheart was a great use of CGI there it was appropriate and it was utilized well. I think they are now using CGI for the sake of using CGI instead of an actual purpose. The Matrix movies utilized CGI a lot but they also utilized a lot of really good special effects. I think CGI should be used as an enhancer not the only means of special effects.

I should add that my favorite type of special effects are the traditional theatrical ones that you'll get in the muppet movies, like the Muppet Christmass Carrol or Muppet Treasure Island.  They just use simple things like a bright light or a shadow and do it really good.  Always entertaining.

I saw Avatar last night at the Cinerama theatre last night.  It was really fun.  Plot?  Pshaw!  Lots of great action?  Oh Yeah.  Visually impressive and only at moments did the CGI pull me from the story. For me it was like experiencing what a genre innocent might dream up as sci fi.  Robots, helicopters, monsters, anthropomorphic vaguely mammalian (hence the need for alien boobs) and sort of Apache/Cherokee style natives.  Very fun...but most fun?

The F%&$#@G trailer for CLASH OF THE TITANS!  So much HELL YES! in that.  Woot.  The cast is ridiculous.  Liam Neeson as Zeus?  Yes please!

Anyone else seen The Kings Speech yet?  I wanted to get to it but then a nice date night came up and it was a go.  Two hours of Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush with a dash of a very understated Helena Bonham Carter.  Not to be beat.  Including the swearing scene previously given an NC-17 rating!

The wife and I loved the King's Speech. Brilliant film.

We were split on True Grit. I saw it as a great western. She couldn't separate it from the original. (Which I also think is a great film.)

We also saw Tron Legacy the same weekend as True Grit, which lead to a lot of cognitive dissonance as far as Jeff Bridges went. Especially since he had some scenes where he seemed to be channeling The Dude.

We liked Gnomeo and Juliet. Plenty of Shakespeare in-jokes.

We also both thought the Black Swan was a brilliant film, but neither of us really thought of it as "our kind of movie."

The wife and I loved the King's speech, really a great movie. Firth, Rush and Carter were excellent!  How can you beat those three?

I also loved Tangled.  If its possible to fall in love with a CGI character, Mandy Moore's voice won my heart.
Red was fun.
I'm not sure how I felt about Tron Legacy.  I think it will take another go to really make up my mind.

Has anybody managed to see Space Battleship Yamato?  It came out in Japan back in December.  I'm still looking for it.

It would seem that there have not been any decisions about a US release.  There are posters made for the US and a quick discussion at the following website.  It seems like they certainly want a US release.

RED was probably the most fun action movie I've seen in years. Great cast and it hit the formula just right.

Space Battleship Yamato is on my want to see list. (Has been since the 1980's  Wink )

Also looking forward to Cowboys and Aliens and Battle: LA. The first because I like the genre mashup and the second because I love a big budget action/disaster movie, no matter how dumb they get.

I'm honestly contemplating the expenditure for a Region 2 DVD. It's already out on DVD over in the UK, but Lionsgate hasn't released it in the US for one reason or another. (I'd watch it on my computer which is not set for a region)

I just happen to have ordered solomon kane last week.

Very simple plot, but it totally lived up to expectations.

It was so much what I wanted to view and it was well enough done that I actually watched it twice in a row.

Ordered it how? Do you have a Region 2 player, or what?
