Meh, it's like gaming genres - there are people that will never play an MMO or a first person shooter. There are maybe even people that would be forking themselves to stay awake while reading the newsfax for this game! I remember when everyone went on and on about Titanic and I was all bleh. ^^ So it's not that your uncultural, it just doesn't float your boat. Miyazaki's movies tend to have strong sub-themes of nostalgia and an attention to those slow non-event moments in life and be more slow paced. But there is some variety to them, you might find Porco Rosso more interesting. But it's not everyone's cup of tea. There are anime fans that will never watch Miyazaki but have watched every Gundam tv show/movie/ova in existence. I hear ya, I prefer starblazer, macross, and robotech. but on occasion enjoy the more slow paced movies as well. Vampire hunter D (just the first one, not the sequel), Ninja Scroll (ditto) and Fist of the North Star were fun as well!

We really enjoyed "District 9." Very well done and full of good story. We see a lot of movies and this is one of the better ones in recent memory. The wife and I were discussing it and I'm afraid that their going to get overwhelmed by "Hollywood" types and screw up the sequel. I hope they are able to retain the team that produced this and not "go Hollywood" for the sequel.
Tomorrow we see "The Goods." Looking forward to that.

I hope being under Peter Jacksons protection will help Blomkamp somewhat. It's good to see something well done for around 30 million.

Yeah, we went to see District 9 as well. I will add my praise to the other posts that have been on here. It was a pleasure to see an action/adventure movie that had a brain too.
It was a little harsh at times, but I'm glad I saw it.

District 9- go see it.
Lot of "grey area" in that movie. Much exploration of moral ambiguity, very enjoyable, and a stellar performance by the lead, an actor I'm sure we'll see more of given this performance.

District 9... great sci fi movie. And full of social commentary, to me it was pretty much a case study of how humanity demonizes members of it's own. It can be easily mapped over almost any conflict throughout history, Nazi's over Jews for WW2, white settlers/gov. over Native Americans with expansion across the continent, and more modern Israel over the Palestinians to name just a few... all in the name of what the competing/more powerful group wants in the form of material rescources or whatever else they want...

There are anime fans that will never watch Miyazaki but have watched every Gundam tv show/movie/ova in existence. Hear, Hear! (here, here? hair, hair?) Don't get me started on Anime. I have no idea why, but it's so irritating to me. It's rather daunting, since I try to have an open-mind (shut up, Mike) about most everything. I'm also an artist, so one would think I'd be slightly more accepting of the genre. Nope. Not having it. However, Miyazaki's movies have been interesting to see. Just recently introduced to them. *shrug* tomato, tamato...

Considering the breadth of anime styles in existence, I suspect there may be stuff you'd actually like but just haven't been introduced to yet. Anime is a very broad term, it pretty much means any animation created in Japan, but might also include any animation done in a style used in Japan. There are certainly some styles much more prevalent. And definitely there are cultural elements (such as what one sees with Asian MMOs versus western MMOs). It's just like reading US comic books by the main companies and saying you don't like American comic styles. It totally ignores the massive number of independent comics (on paper and online) which have a vast range of styles. But I can see your point, I don't like watching most sports beyond just a little American football once in a blue moon. Hm, perhaps even that isn't really true, after all I like to watch a little Wipeout, we went through an American Gladiator spell, there's also game shows that have physical elements such as the Amazing Race, the Mole and even Survivor which could make them considered sports. But perhaps that's defining sports too loosely.

I'm hoping to catch a showing of Ponyo this weekend. First, however, there is a little matter of Inglorious Basterds to try to see...!

Inglorious Basterds!
You probably know whether or not you want to see this -- people have pretty strong reactions to Quentin Tarantino. If you hate his stuff, this movie will not make you love him.
If you are a Tarantino fan, however, I think you'll enjoy it. The movie bears his unmistakable stamp. The WWII setting forces him to try some new techniques than he usually would. The cast is excellent -- Brad Pitt is a howl. And Christoph Waltz is an admirably creepy villain.
Bloody, though.

Thanks for the warning. I think I nearly passed out when I went to see Pulp Fiction. It was the needle scene... I still get woozy thinking about it.

Saw this and it was worth the price of the ticket. Christoph Waltz is, in short, amazing. Right up there with Alan Rickman for villian actors.

Ponyo tonight.
Really enjoyed it. It was bright, sweet film with a childlike innocence about it. I'm not normally in big advocate of "Sweet" in my movies, but the visual inventiveness was enough to keep me satisfied.
There were los of parents with kids, and they seemed to able to enjoy the film on various levels....

I'm going to have to agree with everyone who liked "Inglorious Basterds." I thought it was great. I really liked the way tension was built. Everyone is being all nice and cordial, but right below the surface is murder. Sure there was blood and violence (ooh boy was there violence), but it was surprisingly brief, for Tarantino. It also seemed very matter-of-fact as opposed to the over-the-top comic book violence in Kill Bill.
I found the ending very satisfactory as well.
All in all, go see it. Unless you have a problem with blood. Then still go see it, and take someone you trust to tell you when it's safe to look.
