I had the same problem with Rachel Getting Married. I thought it was gonna be a comedy about a dysfunctional family, and found myself in searing portrait of grief and loss.

Fortunately, it was a really good movie.

But it was REALLY not funny...!

Yeah, I finally saw Funny People and enjoyed it, but I'm glad I understood that it was more of a drama!

District 9 was really good.  It's amazing how much less it costs to have good storytelling vs continual explosions.

Not that there aren't some really awesome meat-sack rendering in this puppy.  It's a strong indictment against apartheid as well as fun listening to the residents of Jo'burg ramble on.

I'm really looking forward to this show.  I sensed a strong statement regarding blind prejudice...sounds like the snese carried through into the plot...good!

Took the family to Ponyo, the latest Miyazaki masterpiece to come across the Pacific pond.  Very good, not as dark as previous movies and the hero and heroine are 5 years old, so it was more geared for my 4 year old to enjoy it (which he did, and he's a wiggler, but he stayed sitting the whole time watching the movie so it must have kept him entertained - other "kid" movies have had us continually herding him back into his seat).  I enjoyed it, my wife thought it was okay but thought Spirited Away was better, so your entertainment mileage may vary depending on how much you enjoy slower paced animated movies.

There is one scene in particular that *really* brings it home as the guys joke around.

Loved princess Mononoki and the Nausicca comic. I thought spirited away was a bit tougher to handle. I like his depictions of nature in particular.

I'm beginning to think that all those girls in high school were right- I must be a lowbrow, uncultured boorish slob without the slightest cultural sophistication.
Miyazaki puts me to sleep. I had to stab myself in the leg with a spork to stay awake  through "Spirited Away". Seemed like it was 12 hours long. Does this guy not know any film editors?

Meh, it's like gaming genres - there are people that will never play an MMO or a first person shooter.  There are maybe even people that would be forking themselves to stay awake while reading the newsfax for this game!  Shocked  I remember when everyone went on and on about Titanic and I was all bleh. ^^  So it's not that your uncultural, it just doesn't float your boat.  Miyazaki's movies tend to have strong sub-themes of nostalgia and an attention to those slow non-event moments in life and be more slow paced.  But there is some variety to them, you might find Porco Rosso more interesting.  But it's not everyone's cup of tea.  There are anime fans that will never watch Miyazaki but have watched every Gundam tv show/movie/ova in existence.
