Speaking of Simon Pegg, I was watching Band of Brothers on History Ch., he was in it! He played Capt. Sowell's (SP?)-(the asshole/dipshit "Ross" drill instructor) sidekick/assistant...

Loved the "townspeak" in hot fuzz. That was some really fun and clever language. Also loved the way it built up and slowly spiraled out of control.

Shawn of the dead was great too.

I thought it was a lot of fun. Not a good movie, but highly entertaining. Check out this review, I think it says it all: http://io9.com/5301898/michael-bay-finally-made-an-art-movie

If you're tired of watching movies aimed at 15-year olds -- and you like classic gangster pictures -- then I highly recommend Public Enemies.

Johnny Depp is good as the psychopathic Dillinger, with a lollipopy smile that never touches his dead eyes. Christian Bale is also good as tightly-wound G-man Melvin Purvis. In the few scenes the two have together, they have old-fashioned movie star chemistry. Marion Cotillard is also good as Dillinger's girlfriend but that part of the movie never quite rang true for me.

Director Michale Mann used high definition digital cameras to shoot the film and it looks absolutely gorgeous....

Alright, you've sold me.  I'll see it.

I've been a cinematographile ever since the opening scenes of (believe it or not) Flatliners.  Where various views of the campus are shown, statues, obscure angles of buildings, etc... then an arial shot of Keiffer Sutherland, closing in on him... to close-up, where he then says, "It's a good day to die."

I was young, and obviously impressionable.

I must track that down.  Haven't seen it in years.
How many years?  Last-seen-on-VHS many years.
That was my introduction to Oliver Platt, as well... sigh.  Rennel Steckell.

Pardon me... I'll be back later  Roll Eyes  Grin

We went to see "The Hurt Locker" today.

It is a great movie. I'm usually not one for the directorial school of "shaky cam" but it works well for this film. It provides the "you are there" experience.

In case you haven't heard of it, it is about an EOD (bomb squad) team in Iraq in 2004. While some of the military stuff isn't quite right, the story that is told is superb.

The first half of the film is extremely intense. About halfway through, after the tension bled off some, I found I was nauseous from the adrenaline that had been shooting through my system. By the end of the movie I was exhausted. My back and thighs were cramped from the suspense and tension.

Whatever your feelings on the war in Iraq, I highly recommend seeing it. (Disclaimer: it is full of foul language and graphic violence. It's about a war, after all. If you don't like that sort of thing, disregard my recommendation.)

Due to the heatwave I was in the movies a lot the past few days.  I saw Bruno (a couple of funny moments but...yeah...) then 500 Days of Summer which is a great film for the guys!  It's not a chick flick but really encapsulates the "Boy meets girl, Boy tries to figure out what the hell went wrong" dynamic.  I just saw Funny People tonight it's a pretty funny movie with some excellent drama thrown in for maximum discomfort.

Glad to hear "500 Days of Summer" was good. We're looking forward to it. I think it opens here next week.

We saw "Funny People" today. We liked it. Just as a PSA, it is not a comedy. You'll laugh a lot, but it is not a comedy. But it is an enjoyable film.

It wasn't as bad as the shock I got from when I went to see Forrest Gump because I thought it was a comedy.

I had the same problem with Rachel Getting Married. I thought it was gonna be a comedy about a dysfunctional family, and found myself in searing portrait of grief and loss.

Fortunately, it was a really good movie.

But it was REALLY not funny...!
